The Dallas Mavericks are 2-3 on the season and are off to a slow start in a season that is supposed to be Luka Doncic’s MVP season. The Mavericks are currently playing without star forward Kristaps Porzingis, who is recovering from surgery and is slated to come back this month. The Mavericks have 16 remaining games in the month of January. Its has been reported that he will be back within the next 2 weeks. If we project out to him coming back the week of January 18th that leaves him likely playing against the Indiana Pacers for his season debut. The Mavericks do have 2 sets of back to back games this same week so it will be interesting to see how much Porzingis plays the week he comes back.
When Porzingis comes back, I predict that the Mavericks will be 5-9 assuming he makes his debut against the Indiana Pacers. The Mavericks have to shoot better they are currently ranked 27th in the NBA when it comes to 3-point field goal percentage. This includes star player Doncic who isshooting 5 for 31 form the 3-point line which is just 16%. This is very telling and can be Dallas’ Achilles heel if they do not take smarter shots. Also, another scorer must emerge because they are 28th in scoring and 23rd in assist per game. Also they only have 3 players that average at least 10 points. I understand Porzingis will help with the scoring load but he will likely not play in any back to backs. With that being said I predict if the Mavericks go into February under .500 they will not make the playoffs.
