Today, May 5th the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
issued a video saying that the NFL was wrong for not listening and silencing
the player's voices. In addition, they acknowledged that both Black Lives Matter and
that there would be no NFL without black players. My first thoughts are that he
did this solely because the players put out their video yesterday saying that
Black Lives Matter and that they will no longer be silenced. Also, they pleaded
for the NFL to come out and speak against the injustices occurring in America
when it pertains to police brutality. Even though the Goodell came out and made
that statement I feel as though it is reactionary and being done due to fear of
receiving backlash for the player’s making a statement but not the league.
Kaepernick tried to bring awareness to this very issue and the NFL shunned him
and has kept him out the league. Yes, they provided an opportunity for him to
try out last year in 2019 but between the unusualness of the formation
of which the workout came about; and the mistrust between both sides made the event not occur as
planned and to this day Kaepernick is not signed. It will be interesting to see
how the NFL handles any potential protest during the 2020 season. The NFL has
agreed to pledge $20 million to the inspire change campaign to help combat
systemic racism. Many people think in order to make things right a team must
sign Kaepernick. It is hard to say you stand with us when you ostracized the
one person who tried to get you to listen. I was always told what is done in
the dark will come to the light! 3 years later the NFL admits that they were wrong,
but does that mean I have to forgive you?
